keeping your plant happy
plants aren't terribly demanding. give them the right amount of light, a drink when they need one, a little attention now and then, and they'll generally do the rest.
every plant is a little different, so think of these as good starting points rather than hard and fast rules.
light
most indoor plants like plenty of bright, indirect light.
a spot near a window is usually a good place to start, but avoid strong afternoon sun on delicate leaves, as it can scorch them.
succulents are a little more sun-loving. they generally enjoy bright light and some direct sun.
watering
the golden rule: check the soil before you water.
for most indoor plants, let the top few centimetres of soil dry out before giving them a good drink. water thoroughly, then let the excess drain away.
succulents like things much drier. let the soil dry out completely before watering again.
if you're unsure, wait a little. overwatering is one of the most common ways to upset a plant.
leaves come and go
a yellow or dying leaf isn't necessarily a problem.
just like us, plants have a natural life cycle. older leaves will sometimes yellow, dry out and drop away as the plant puts its energy into new growth.
if it's just the occasional older leaf, there's usually no need to worry.
if you're seeing lots of yellowing leaves at once, it's worth taking a closer look at light and watering.
give it a little tidy
don't be afraid to remove leaves that are yellow, brown, damaged or completely dead.
use clean, sharp scissors and snip the leaf or stem close to its base.
a little pruning keeps your plant looking tidy and makes room for new growth.
keep the leaves clean
dusty leaves can make it harder for a plant to make the most of its light.
every so often, gently wipe broad leaves with a soft, damp cloth.
skip the leaf shine products. your plant doesn't need them.
when your plant arrives
your plant may need a little time to settle into its new home.
give it the right light, check the soil before watering and resist the urge to immediately repot or fuss over it.
let it settle. watch it. then respond to what it tells you.
one last thing
there isn't a perfect watering schedule.
what your plant needs will depend on the plant, pot, soil, light, temperature and time of year.
so rather than watering because it's tuesday, check your plant first.
and if you're not sure what your plant is trying to tell you, just ask.
we're happy to help.
good things, growing.
